Course details

This course will introduce the students to NKBA Graphic Standards to develop the skills required to sit the NKBA Certified Kitchen and Bath Designer exams. Students will review the differences between drawing methods used in the interior design industry compared to NKBA standardized kitchen/bath industries. Using a current release of software commonly used in the kitchen and bath cabinetry industry, students will become familiar with creating 2D and 3D drawings. Overall emphasis of the course will be on using this software to create drawings for a residential project that aligns to NKBA standards.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Differentiate between NKBA graphic standards and professional interior design industry graphic standards.
  • Measure and record a space accurately in accordance with NKBA standards.
  • Discuss the difference between producing drawings for an existing space and a new construction project.
  • Use basic commands in software commonly used in the kitchen and bath cabinetry industry to create drawings with NKBA-standard scale, lineweights, dimensioning, symbols and specification formats.
  • Produce an NKBA-standard working drawing set that includes a title page/design statement, floor plan, construction plan, mechanical plan, reflected ceiling plan, countertop plan, interior elevations, details/sections, specification schedules and a 3D perspective drawing.
  • Identify whether content in an NKBA-standard working drawing set is required or optional.
  • Convert drawings created in software to PDF format.
  • Identify software options for writing the NKBA Certified Kitchen and Bath Designer exams.
