Course details

Upgrades and refreshes the mathematical skills of students who intend to enter the School of Business at BCIT. A suitable prerequisite for the mathematics courses in the School of Business as it meets the Math 11 entrance requirement. The course includes arithmetic, elementary algebra, graphical techniques, ratios, percentages and the elementary business applications of these concepts.

  2. Class delivery via Zoom. The tuition portion of this course is free for Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents. Please note: ancillary fees such as Student Association fees, BCIT ID card fees, etc. will be charged and must be paid. If you are eligible for free tuition and are registering through the online system, your account will be adjusted within 2 business days after registration. Please log into your my.bcit.ca account 2 business days after registration to make payment for the ancillary fees. This payment is required in order for you to secure a seat in the course. Failure to pay will result in the course being dropped without notice. Eligible students who paid tuition will receive refunds within 6 weeks. This is not a self-paced course. You will be expected to be available and online on the posted days and times shown on your registration schedule. This online course is taught using the Zoom video conferencing software. You will be sent instructions about a week before the course starts. Course content, type and quality of assignments and general standards for this online course are the same as classroom courses. Please note: ALL students are required to write the final exam at BCIT's main campus on March 23 at 9:00 am or arrange for a proctor by going to your local library, or an accredited college or university well in advance of the final exam date to book an in-person exam with their staff. Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Add, subtract, multiply, divide, and convert between numbers, decimals, fractions, and percents.
  • Multiple and divide numbers and terms with exponents.
  • Follow the order of operations.
  • Solve number, rate, comparison, money, inequality, ratio and proportion, mixture, break-even and quadratic formula problems using one and/or two variables.
  • Graph lines, linear inequalities, and non-linear equations.
  • Factor trinomials.
  • Solve polynomial equations.
  • Solve equations with one variable.
  • Solve pairs of equations with two variables by the substitution, elimination and graphing methods.
  • Solve quadratic equations using the quadratic form of the equation and the quadratic formula.
