This course will examine landfill site selection, landfill capacity analysis, landfill construction and operations, environment systems overview of leachate generation and landfill gas.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
- Describe the various aspects of solid waste management and the multidisciplinary tasks associated with practical landfill management.
- Discuss regulations pertaining to solid waste management in BC.
- Illustrate landfill planning and the factors that affect operations, siting and environmental impacts including:
- Predicting population increase and solid waste generation volumes.
- Designing the appropriate facility based on predicted incoming tonnage and volume.
- Determining the size and layout of the facility.
- Locating a suitable site based on the incoming tonnage and layout requirements.
- Develop landfill design requirements, input and regulatory criteria.
- Develop landfill infrastructure, layout and engineering requirements.
- Describe operational criteria and requirements, including practical ways to achieve these.
- Outline cover requirements, engineering design and emplacement.
- Plan landfill economics and costing.
- Develop an operational plan for efficient and appropriate landfill closure.
