Course details

In this course, students will explore the regulatory, policy, and various approaches to reduce energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions (both operational and embodied) and promote renewable energy and carbon storage in new and existing buildings. Student will gain insights into Deep Energy and Carbon Retrofits and the essential elements of Net Zero Energy and Zero Carbon new construction. ​

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Identify the regulatory, policy and program approaches to reducing energy use and encouraging renewable energy in new buildings.
  • Understand the essential elements of a Zero Energy / Zero Emissions building, including the concept of Net Zero.
  • Describe the BC Energy Step Code and BC Zero Carbon Step Code
  • Describe the Passive House and Zero Carbon standards.
  • Explain the difference between operational and embodied carbon.
  • Evaluate option for carbon storage within buildings, and related business model with carbon credits.
  • Understand the concept of purchasing carbon offets.​
