Course Overview
This course is designed for students interested in creating their own independent film projects. The art of bringing stories to life through film is explored through the lens of constantly evolving technologies and social media. Beyond studying the elements of good storytelling, you will discover creative and distribution tools. Through case studies and practical exercises, production from an independent film perspective is explored with a focus on pre-production, breakdown of scripts, budgeting and scheduling, shot-listing, casting, crewing, effective lighting, sound techniques to final project distribution. Industry guest speakers will be invited to attend some lessons and will bring their industry expertise and provide student feedback.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
- Create an engaging short film proposal that demonstrates elements of good storytelling.
- Breakdown a short film script and create a realistic and budget-conscious shooting schedule.
- Explore social media as an avenue for independent film financing and crowd sourcing.
- Compare and contrast different cameras available to the independent film-maker and determine the appropriate camera for a project given specific requirements, including resolution requirements, budget constraints, and final distribution.
- Discuss the importance of shot-listing, story-boarding, and cast/crew in the pre-production process.
- Explain lighting techniques and the importance of sound in independent film projects.
- Identify and explore the different channels of distribution available to film-makers today and describe the historical changes brought about rapidly advancing technology.
- Work in a green screen studio environment to film for visual effects.
- Develop treatments for short for projects and episodic pilots.
