Course Overview
General Sonography Lab 2 is a continuation of DSON 1011. Students gain additional experience in the sonographic assessment and documentation of abdominal and pelvic organs. Students will learn endovaginal and basic obstetric imaging techniques utilizing endovaginal phantoms and other simulators. Scanning skills for carotid arteries and leg veins, including the use of Doppler, are also covered. Thorough assessment, image quality, organization, and time management are emphasized in this course. Students will use the Picture and Archiving Communication System (PACS) for storage and retrieval of images. Coursework will include online modules on the Learning Hub, hands-on labs, and case studies. Additionally, the principles of human behaviour are incorporated throughout this course. Students are introduced to Inter-Professional Education (IPE) through shared activities with other BCIT health students. Communication and safe ergonomic practice are essential competencies and form an integral part of all applied lab courses in this program.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Question the patient to obtain relevant information regarding history and condition. (1.1f)
- Build 2D and Doppler assessment skills (and measurements where applicable) by introducing problem-solving and critical thinking skills to complete the following normal, uncomplicated ultrasound examinations:
- Abdominal ultrasound to include: aorta and tributaries, inferior vena cava, pancreas, liver, gallbladder, biliary tract, spleen, kidneys, urinary tract, and urinary bladder
- Male pelvis, transvesical assessment of prostate and seminal seminal vesicles
- Female pelvis, transvesical assessment and endovaginal (EV) phantom are used to assess the uterus and ovaries
- Extracranial arteries: Carotid Doppler
- Lower extremity peripheral veins (to rule out DVT).
- On an obstetrical simulator, complete ultrasound examinations, including 2D assessment, endovaginal assessment, M-mode, and 2D measurements (when applicable) on the structures of interest described in NCP 6.1 Appendix A. Note: structures of interest include fetal: age, growth, head, spine, face, neck, chest, thorax, heart, abdomen, umbilical cord, pelvis, skin, musculoskeletal system, and placenta. In addition, this includes the determination of amniotic fluid, chronicity, cervical length, fetal lie, fetal presentation and yolk sac. (Appendix A)
- Identify landmarks necessary and verbalize methodology to locate the vermiform appendix. (Appendix B)
- Ensure all applicable components of the examination are complete. (5.3l)
- Communicate departmental reporting procedures to the patient. (1.1g)
- Identify and respond to exceptions from established protocols and procedures. (2.2g)
- Identify and prioritize differential findings. (5.4e)
- Formulate and communicate an accurate technical impression based on patient history and sonographic findings.
- Recognize and document equipment and technical limitations. (5.3m, 5.3n, 5.4f)
