Course details

The field of Business Analytics is growing in every industry sector. Business decisions are now made with the support of data and methodologies to develop strategic advantage. This course explores the lifecycle of applied business analytics and develops the skills needed to be successful in a business analytics role. Students will learn to conduct business analytics projects from start to finish, including developing business needs, requirements gathering and developing a hypothesis, data preparation and exploration, identifying metrics, using best practices in report development, performing ethical and legal use of data, and effectively communicating analytics results. Students will complete real-world studies using business analytics techniques.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

  • Apply business analytics in organizations using data-driven insights.
  • Carry out an analytics project from start to finish using a systematic approach.
  • Apply analytics in multiple business scenarios and roles, such as marketing, customer service, prediction, and geomatics.
  • Communicate effectively with business, including stakeholder interviews, gathering requirements, framing business problems, and forming hypotheses.
  • Gather and use data effectively, including analytical techniques to consolidate and clean data in an analytics environment.
  • Select the correct methodology to understand data, and perform appropriate techniques to discover trends and analyze patterns.
  • Identify relevant metrics and create effective charts, reports, and dashboards.
  • Use storytelling and visualizations to communicate analytics findings effectively and to generate strategic conversation.
  • Communicate how qualitative research fits into overall decision support.
  • Leverage the opportunities found in unstructured data and its unique challenges.
  • Identify the appropriate ethical and legal guidelines for data use.​
