Course Overview
NOTE: All registrants must first contact poly@bcit.ca Effective use of communication tools in online learning environments that support discourse leads to learner engagement and positive educational experiences. Using the Community of Inquiry Framework as a backbone, participants in this course will design discussion and collaborative activities that take advantage of the affordances of synchronous and asynchronous technologies. This fully online workshop is fully experiential with hands-on, authentic facilitating opportunities. Participants will lead discussion and collaborative activities with the cohort group twice, once with an asynchronous tool, and once with a synchronous tool, and they will give and receive feedback on facilitation practice. This course addresses fostering learning online for in-person, hyflex, blended and online delivery modes.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify strategies and tools to facilitate and motivate learning online.
- Develop an action plan for creating engaging synchronous and asynchronous discussion and collaborative activities for in-person, hyflex, blended and online delivery modes.
- Develop methods for efficiently assessing learning and providing effective student feedback on learning through discussion and collaborative activities.
- Apply concepts of quality, presence, and interaction to the development of activities and assessments.
- Frame discussion questions to encourage divergent, reflective responses.
- Facilitate an asynchronous learning activity.
- Facilitate a synchronous learning activity.
- Apply techniques to encourage participation.
- Apply best practices to sustain a community of learning in an online environment.
- Monitor and support the progress of online learners to ensure meaningful participation.
