Course Overview
This course provides the forensic knowledge and skills for forensic health assessments, evidence collection, chain-of-custody, medicolegal documentation and evaluation of victims of sexual violence (adult and adolescent). The course prepares registered nurses for the role of a forensic nurse examiner within forensic nursing programs. Instructors are industry experts from within healthcare, law enforcement, criminal justice and forensic sciences. Students will complete an individual assignment and an analytical paper and exams.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Recognize the clinical nursing/ medical/ forensic and scientific body of knowledge and principles associated with the care of victims of sexual violence (adult and adolescent).
- Evaluate current literature and statistics surrounding sexual violence.
- Discuss self-care for the forensic nurse examiner.
- Develop a comprehensive forensic health care plan for the collection, examination and evaluation of forensic evidence involving victims of sexual violence including secure storage and access to evidence and information.
- Recognize ethical dilemmas in the delivery of care to this special population.
- Utilize medical, legal and ethical principles in the management of forensic health care examinations.
- Develop a curriculum vitae suitable for presentation to the court for the purpose of testifying as an expert witness in the role of a forensic nurse examiner.
- Apply current forensic nurse examiner standards of practice provincially, nationally and internationally.
