Course Overview
The Engine Room Resource Management course is designed to build awareness of a systematic approach to the management of engine room systems and resources by following good operating practices and developing appropriate teamwork skills. Through the media of short lectures, discussion, case studies, and simulation exercises, students will analyze error chains, conceptualize leadership/teamwork qualities, and comply with company fleet regulations.

- An appropriate Certificate of Competency as Chief Engineer or Second Engineer (Motorship).

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Appreciate the contribution of Human error in most marine casualties.
- Allocate, assign, and prioritize engine room resources for safe and efficient operation of the plant.
- Appreciate the causes and consequences of fatigue associated to lack of sleep.
- Understand the communication process and the barriers to effective communication.
- Understand the reasons for and resolution of conflict in the Engine room.
- Review the need for situational awareness especially during "Red Zone" periods.
- Appreciate the skills associated with leadership, teamwork, and synergy.
- Use the Swiss cheese model in identifying the deep rooted underlying causes of accidents.
- Analyse case studies.
