Module 1 - History of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design

• Describe the principles and early development of CPTED.
• Define crimes as applied within the principles of CPTED.
• Explain what is the main deterrent to crime.

Module 2 - Principles of CPTED

• Explain the four principles of CPTED providing at least one example of each area.
• Explain why the fortress mentality does not apply to CPTED principles.
• Describe the four types of space in the Hierarchy of Space.
• List two different ways of improving Natural Surveillance.
• Describe the effect that graffiti has on the Territoriality Instinct.
• Identify two different types of access controls used in commercial premises.

Module 3 - Area Surveillance and CPTED

• Explain the importance of surveillance.
• Explain the difference between natural surveillance in the community and the workplace.
• List circumstances of when a call button would be used to summon assistance by an employee working alone.
• List the two most popular pieces of office equipment as weapons of choice in the early 90s.
• List the advantages and disadvantages of neo-traditional housing from a CPTED perspective.
• Explain the difference between a real and a psychological barrier.
• Describe what is meant by incivilities.

Module 4 - CPTED in the Workplace

• Explain the importance of enhancing natural surveillance in the workplace.
• List five key factors involved with CPTED in the workplace.
• Describe access control and the types of barriers found in the workplace.

• List five different types of space associated with the workplace.
• Prepare an employee orientation checklist that covers the CPTED principles in the workplace.

Module 5 - Useful Materials and Technologies for CPTED

• List common materials considered essential in target hardening premises as part of CPTED.
• List the five key factors involved with CPTED.
• Explain how technological changes have affected three of the key factors involved with CPTED.
• List the correct procedures to complete a residential site evaluation.
• Describe at least five evaluation areas for each of the five key factors involved with CPTED.
• Explain the correct procedures to conduct a workplace evaluation.
• Describe at least five evaluation areas that are separate and distinct from residential site evaluations.

Module 6 - Site Evaluation

• Interpret actual sites or plan drawings from a CPTED perspective.
• Utilize a checklist, inspect specific locations such as a residential area or workplace from both a CPTED and a crime prevention perspective.
• List and explain how new technologies can help ensure that the five key factors in CPTED remain both efficient and effective.
