Course Overview
This course provides an overview of Power Plant Operations and Electricity Generation. Topics covered include; chemistry fundamentals, corrosion principles, internal water treatment for boilers, boiler water pre-treatment, non-boiler water treatment, water chemistry and analysis, water pre-treatment, internal water treatment, overview of power plant, introduction to boilers, power plant instrumentation, oil fired boilers, stocker fired boilers using bio-mass, ash handling systems, controls, power plant auxiliary equipment, condensate systems, water processing and conditioning, feedwater systems, steam turbines overview, steam turbine operation, condensers, electrical production and distribution.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, plus practical on-the-job training and experience, participants will have sufficient knowledge to:
- Describe pulp mill water and steam distribution systems.
- Describe boiler water preparation and pumping systems.
- Describe the general design requirements and construction features of boilers including the major fluid flows through a boiler.
- Describe characteristics, storage and handling of fuel oil.
- Describe combustion of oil and bio-mass fuels.
- Describe stocker firing and ash handling systems.
- Describe basic boiler control instrumentation including water level, steam and furnace pressure, steam temperature and burner management control strategies.
- Describe power plant auxiliary equipment.
- Describe steam condensate systems and corrosion prevention.
- Describe steam turbine components, control devices and auxiliary systems.
- Describe electricity production, distribution and protection.
