Course Overview
This course consists of five days of intensive lectures, demonstration of laboratory tests (no hands-on), and discussions concerning all phases of asphalt technology. The purpose of this intensive course is to provide a basic understanding of all phases of HMA technology. Upon completion, the participant will be able to make knowledgeable decisions related to HMA pavements and communicate effectively with asphalt specialists when the need arises. Topics include asphaltic cement testing, aggregate testing, and asphaltic mix design, structural design, road paving equipment, troubleshooting, contract administration and quality control. The class will visit a producing asphalt plant.

- Basic computer competence and minimum Grade 11 English.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify the types and uses of asphaltic cements and perform required asphalt cement tests.
- Discuss the methods of sourcing and evaluating mineral aggregates.
- Design and calculate asphaltic concrete mixes.
- Review testing procedures in accordance with standards and codes (CSA, ASTM, etc.).
- Illustrate and explain the various asphaltic plants functions and performance.
- Describe subgrade preparation, paving procedure, compaction, inspection and quality control for road construction.
