Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Discuss the principles, concepts, observing techniques and instrumentation of high-precision surveys, including sources and types of errors as they relate to the techniques and instruments.
- Interpret precision, accuracy standards and survey specifications for conducting terrestrial and GPS surveys.
- Carry out error analysis of survey measurements, such as angles (directions), distances, and height differences.
- Design by pre-analysis the appropriate combination of survey techniques (conventional and GPS) and equipment for field data collection to satisfy specified quality requirements (in 1D, 2D and 3D).
- Carry out simple Calibration and testing of survey equipment using standardized methods and procedures.
- Assess data gathered for the calibration and testing of survey equipment, for precision measurements.
- Carry out a variety of precise measurements and calculations to test and assess accuracy and limitations of survey equipment.
- Carry out a variety of precise measurements and calculations to obtain three dimensional coordinates of targeted points located on an object or surface.
- Analyse the positioning accuracy and applications of three-dimensional coordinating systems, including terrestrial laser scanner systems and photogrammetric methods.
- Explain some aspects of deformation monitoring techniques and analyses.
- Describe the techniques of alignment and underground (tunnelling and mine) surveys.
- Carry out azimuth-determination project and perform necessary reductions in order to obtain astronomic azimuths and the grid azimuths.
