Course Overview
This 14-hour course will provide knowledge to help site supervisors, general contractors, tradespeople, and designers or consultants develop the applied knowledge to build to the Upper Step of the BC Energy Step Code. Students will learn from industry experts and develop an applied understanding of Net Zero Energy Ready (NZER) buildings, including building science, airtight design and construction, thermal-bridge free and highly insulated assembly details. The course includes an introduction to ventilation and mechanical systems for NZER buildings. Students will develop a solid understanding of the BC Energy Step Code metrics, processes and quality control. Deeper dive into airtight and low-TEDI enclosures will include specific discussion of enclosure costing, constructability, quality control, supplier constraints, construction management, and commissioning activities.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Explain the BC Energy Step Code performance metrics and processes.
- Identify the unique construction and compliance requirements for projects built in compliance with the BC Energy Step Code.
- Apply building science concepts of air, moisture, and heat in enclosures designed for the upper step of the BC Energy Step Code.
- Describe the process for reviewing detail design options at critical design stages and be aware of several available resources.
- Compare low-TEDI enclosure solution details for specific construction considerations (e.g., mitigating thermal bridging, cost, constructability, etc.)
- Describe solutions to achieve construction airtightness in low-TEDI projects designed for the upper step of the BC Energy Step Code.
- Be aware of the design and construction considerations for mechanical systems in low-TEDI buildings.
