Course Overview
Building upon previous knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes, this course focuses on the selection, design and manufacture of advanced materials and fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) composites. Non-destructive test (NDT) techniques used in production, quality assurance and predictive maintenance are investigated. Failure analysis principles and techniques are applied to the analysis of materials failure case studies. A laboratory component allows for "hands-on" skills development.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
- Explain basic principles and provide examples of applications for "advanced" materials such as advanced composites or high temperature, cryogenic, "smart" and "nano" materials.
- Utilize a wide spectrum of materials property data and lifecycle analysis in choosing suitable engineering materials.
- Demonstrate the use of creep and wear data in design calculations for polymeric materials.
- Perform basic fabrication processes related to FRP composites.
- Explain the principles of non-destructive testing techniques as applied to production, quality assurance and predictive maintenance programs.
- Apply principles and techniques of materials failure analysis to case studies of failed metallic and non-metallic components.
- Use failure case studies to identify common errors or pitfalls in materials selection and processing.
