Course details

​​​​​​Oral and written communication is a major component of the roles and responsibilities of a construction manager. From negotiating contracts, to explaining scopes of work, directing employees to reporting project status, change orders and financial updates to clients; effective and professional communication will help you to gain commitment and buy-in from the variety of stakeholders engaged with every day. This course will provide you opportunities to build on your general communication skills, as well as report writing and presentation skills. The course will focus on the overall structure, organization of information and the logical progression of concepts.

Prerequisite(s)

  • Admission into the Construction Management degree program.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Identify an appropriate method of communication to align with the audience and the nature of the message being sent.
  • Translate key message(s), or information, into clear and concise formats that are appropriate to the audience to both retrieve and understand.
  • Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of format, grammar, and proper citation as expected in all course submissions.
  • Apply the rational use of design tables, figures and graphics to reports that add value to the text.
  • Analyze audience needs and key messages accurately.
  • Develop appropriate structured written and oral presentations that are accurate, relevant, and complete.
