Even if you’re only able to walk part of your commute route to campus, it’s a great option if you’re looking to get some fresh air, improve your general health, reduce traffic on the roads, and save on vehicle costs.

Safety & Security Resources

BCIT provides safey and security resources on campus to ensure a safe campus. The Safer Walk program to walk employees, students and visitors to their destination on campus. If you feel unsafe, Safer Walk can accompany you to your destination. This service is available 24/7 at the Burnaby, CARI, Downtown, and Aerospace Campuses.  A Safer Walk is available at the Marine Campus from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Be safe and be seen: Make yourself visible to drivers

BCIT encourages you to be safe and seen, especially when it gets dark outside. When it comes to traffic safety – being aware of your surroundings is key.

  • Be visible and use crosswalks on campus
  • Pedestrians have the right of way at intersections. When crossing a street make eye contact with drivers. Never assume that a driver has seen you or will stop for you.
  • Do not enter university works yards and construction areas or interfere with workers and equipment in these areas.
  • Be alert to vehicle noises, back up lights, and back up alarms on vehicles.
  • Avoid distractions such as viewing your cell phone or wearing headphones while whiles crossing a road or walking in a parking lot.
  • Wear bright/ light colours clothing and reflective materials at night.

Burnaby Campus Pedestrian Priority Areas

The heart of campus along Goard Way, English Walk, Campus Walk, and Commons Walk on the Burnaby Campus are pedestrian priority areas. Access is restricted to only emergency and service vehicles, general public vehicles are not allowed in the pedestrian priority areas.

When walking on campus, keep an eye out for signs marking priority routes with pedestrians. In these areas, pedestrians are given the right of way and cyclists and service vehicles are asked to please slow to walking speed and yield to pedestrians.

Campus pedestrian routes include a network of sidewalks, shared pathways, and trails along Guichon Creek.
