Course Overview
This course provides the skills and knowledge to safely operate a chainsaw for tasks such as brushing, limbing, or bucking firewood. Students will learn the scope and application of WorkSafeBC regulations, required personal protective (PPE) equipment, chainsaw safety features, safe operation practices, site safety, and basic maintenance and care of chainsaws. The course includes in-class learning and applied hands-on learning, including the use of a chainsaw. Upon successful completion, students will receive the BCIT Basic Chainsaw Operators Certification.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for chainsaw use.
- Identify the basic components and safety features of a chainsaw.
- Describe the function of basic components and safety features of a chainsaw.
- Demonstrate basic maintenance and care of a chainsaw, including sharpening, fueling, and cleaning.
- Complete a work site assessment and related safety documentation.
- Demonstrate safe starting procedure of a chainsaw.
- Demonstrate safe chainsaw operation, including bucking, limbing, and brushing.
- Describe WorksafeBC regulations related to workplace chainsaw use.
This course does NOT certify or prepare students to become certified fallers or to fall trees.
