Course Overview
This course will provide the learner with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform regular maintenane inspections of park components, elements and facilities. Inspections include observation rating, recording and recommending repair, replacement or scheduling of maintenance based on a system of facility safety and extended service life evaluation.

Module 1 - Facility Components
- Describe the various types of maintenance activities related to park grounds inspections.
- Describe the visual quality and environmental considerations relevant to park grounds design, situation and maintenance.
- Describe the various categories of park grounds items and the types of grounds components found in parks.
- Describe the construction elements commonly encountered in park grounds.
Module 2 - Regulations and Standards
- Describe the basic standards and regulations which apply to park grounds construction and maintenance.
- Describe the functions and application of an inventory system for park facilities.
- Identify facility standards which apply to the construction and maintenance of park grounds.
- Explain the components and focus of BC Parks Safety Program (OIIP).
Module 3 - Materials and Construction
- Describe the various soil types found in grounds construction and their general attributes.
- Describe the basic characteristics of sands and gravels used in the construction of common park grounds features.
- Describe the types and characteristics of grasses and other vegetation for parks grounds.
- Explain the key considerations applicable to the installation or construction of the various grounds elements.
Module 4 - Maintenance Activities/Problem Identification
- Identify common maintenance and repair activities and their frequencies.
- Identify common deficiencies in park grounds.
- Explain how deficiencies may be prevented through proper construction, installation and maintenance procedures.
- Prescribe appropriate repair strategies for common park grounds deficiencies.
Module 5 - Maintenance Inspections
- Describe the components of inspection programs.
- Describe the activities required to develop effective action plans for maintenance, repair and rehabilitation of grounds.
- Explain the importance of inspections and quality control programs.
Module 6 - Inspection Reports
- Explain the procedure for maintaining the required records of inspections.
- Complete a sample inspection form.
