Diploma (ECET)


A second-year, full-time, in one of the following options:


Diploma Graduates are eligible to complete a degree in either the BEng Electrical or BTech Electronics programs.


Degree (BEng)


Three more years, full-time:

Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) in Electrical Engineering

BCIT ECET, Mechatronics or Biomedical Diploma graduates may apply directly to the Electrical Engineering program.


Flexible Learning (formerly Part-time studies), evenings and weekends:

Bachelor of Technology (BTech) in Electronics

Diploma graduates and other applicants with similar backgrounds may apply directly to the BTech Electronics program.

BCIT offers a great range of credentials and career paths in the exciting field of electrical and computer engineering. Students have the flexibility of preparing for careers as engineering technologists or as electrical engineers. Our technology programs provide a path to designation as an Applied Science Technologist, and our bachelor programs provide a path to designation as a Professional Engineer. No matter which career path you choose, your education at BCIT will focus on the practical aspects of engineering to open the door to exciting jobs solving a wide range of technical problems in diverse industry settings. The programs

All full-time students begin with a common first year of studies. In the first year you learn about theoretical and practical aspects of:

  • Circuit Analysis
  • Programming
  • Electronic Design
  • Digital Design
  • Calculus and Physics

Entrance requirements for first-year are listed in the ‘Entrance Requirements’ page of any of the Engineering Technology options.

After the successful completion of first year, you choose to continue in either a Technology Diploma or an Engineering Degree path.

The Technology Diploma path requires one additional year, and students choose from one of three specialty options: Automation and Instrumentation, Electrical Power and Industrial Control or Telecommunications and Networks.  Graduates may apply for registration with the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC (ASTTBC) as an Applied Science Technologist (AScT).

The Engineering Degree path requires an additional three years; however you can choose, at any time, to transfer to the diploma path, and with one additional year, you can graduate with a technology diploma. The Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering is approved as a baccalaureate degree by the B.C. Ministry of Advanced Education, is nationally accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board and provides a path to registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng).

The Bachelor of Technology in Electronics (BTech) is a baccalaureate degree approved by the BC Ministry of Advanced Education and is designed for electronics technologists (or equivalent) who want to complete their degree while working. This program also provides a path to registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng).
