Communication
Students receive an email notification inviting them to survey their course. Depending on the length of the course, students may receive this notification anywhere from two days to two weeks before the last day of class. Email reminders may follow depending on whether the student has completed the survey. They may log in to the online system at any time between the initial notification and the course completion date to complete their online survey. However, to ensure high response rates, we encourage instructors to provide students with time in class to fill out complete the survey form.
There are three types of emails you receive from feedback@studentsurveys.bcit.ca throughout the survey cycle. These emails provide links for you to:
- edit the dates your students complete the survey,
- view response rates,
- opt out a course from this survey cycle as per the FSA collective agreement,
- add custom questions for your students to receive
- review your new survey results and previous reports
We ask you to double-check the course information in these emails. Contact your Program Assistant for any changes to the information if needed.
The three types of email will appear with the following email subject lines:
- “IAO – Manage your upcoming surveys and view response rates now.”
- arrives in your inbox approximately one day after the course started
- provide links where you can view response rates
- “IAO – Please select your additional questions today”
- Arrives in your inbox approximately after 1 day after your course starts
- provides the link for you to add 5 additional Likert scale questions from an extensive question bank
- Provides you the opportunity to create two customized comment/open ended questions
- “IAO – Download your reports today”
- Arrives in your inbox approximately 3 weeks after the course end date
Instructors and students receive the emails at the email address they provided to BCIT. (Please make sure BCIT has the most current email).
Please ask students to do the following to find the email:
- Check the spam folder. If it is not in the student’s spam folder, it could be in another email account the student has provided BCIT.
- Check where the survey was sent. The emails are sent to student’s personal email. To check what personal email the student provided to BCIT, follow these steps:
- Log in at my.bcit.ca using your A00 number and password.
- If you do not know your A00 number, click on “Look up your BCIT ID”. It is also printed on your student card.
- If you do not know your password, click on “Forgot your password?”
- On the right hand side, under Online Self Service, click on Student Self Service.
- Under Student personal information, click on “update your personal information”.
- Scroll down, and under Contact Information you will find a box called “Personal email address”.
- This is the email address where the survey invitation was sent. If this address is incorrect, it can be edited here
- Log in at my.bcit.ca using your A00 number and password.
They can still access the link from the reminder they will receive three days after the first email or the student can access a list of online instructor surveys in their D2L account. Each student receives a unique link; therefore, students cannot share links.

Survey management
The basic survey has a set of core questions that will go to your students by default. Additional questions from the question bank may be selected if you are looking for more feedback from your students.
Give students 10 – 15 minutes of class time to complete the survey in either the last or second-last class in the course. Students can use computers or mobile devices. Students not in attendance that day, or without access to a computer or mobile device during class can complete the survey on their own time.
- Students will receive a reminder email about the survey three days after the original invitation if they have not completed the survey.
Students can still complete the survey on their own time, before 11:59 pm on the end date of the course.
Yes. It is possible to do the surveys on the last day of class.
The survey closes at 11:59 PM on the course end date. This is so that student feedback is not influenced by student performance on the final exam.
- Indicate to the students when the survey closes and why. Often, students want to provide feedback after the final and yet, they cannot. The last opportunity for students to do the surveys is the last day of class. This feature is in place so that students are not influenced by the final exam when giving feedback.
Instructors receive an email while the survey is open to students. It includes a link that allows instructors to monitor real time response rates. Instructors will only see the number of surveys submitted, while the anonymity of the student is maintained.
Results
Using your BCIT login, go to bcit.bluera.com/bcit/
Survey results are distributed according to the FSA collective agreement. Like you, your Associate Dean logs in to the secured server to access the summary report only. Just like the summary reports from the paper-based surveys, Associate Deans do not have access to the students’ comments or results from personalized questions you may have added.
Instructors will receive notification to login to review their course survey results by email three weeks after the last day of class, provided that marks have been submitted.
