Course Overview
In this course, participants explore the development of their professional identity as educators. Through guided reflection and analysis, they examine personal values and beliefs about teaching and learning, and consider how these shape their instructional practices. Using tools such as the Teaching Perspectives Inventory (TPI), participants uncover their teaching perspectives and reflect on the alignment between their beliefs, intentions, and actions in the classroom. The course emphasizes the development of a reflective teaching practice, including the creation of a teaching philosophy statement and a professional development plan to stay current with trends in adult education and their specific field. Participants compile a comprehensive Teaching Portfolio that documents their growth and competencies throughout the BCIT Teaching Credential program. This portfolio includes a summary of teaching roles and responsibilities, a teaching statement outlining goals, methods, and strategies and artefacts that provide evidence of effective teaching. In addition, the course introduces the practice of professional peer feedback as a vital component of ongoing performance development and lifelong learning as an educator.
