The Importance of Stormwater Planning for Major Projects & Campus Operations

February 12 from 2:30 pm to 3:45 pm PST

Guichon-Creek-Stormwater-Management

Location NW4 (HSC), Room 1072

BCIT’s Burnaby Campus is a typical urban environment. Large areas are paved and concreted, but at the heart of the campus is Guichon Creek which is an important waterway and wildlife habitat.

This hybrid environment makes it challenging to control and treat rainwater runoff, which is essential to refill groundwater and keep Guichon Creek healthy.

In this lecture consultant engineers Kerr Wood Leidel (KWL) will explore how to build stormwater management into the overall development of the campus. This will encompass the development a Stormwater Management Strategy at BCIT, and how these principles can be applied to major projects or used to support campus operations. Nick Foster, Principal at OMB will discuss how these ideas could be applied in practice as part of the upcoming South Campus Infrastructure Renewal Project. KWL worked on the development of the Strategy and have also provided expertise to other BCIT projects.

The topics will include:
• Principles of strategy (Guichon Creek as campus backbone, water balanced campus, public realm, etc.)
• Developing targets / objectives for SWM / source controls which ultimately improve the quality of water entering Guichon Creek
• Using monitoring data to calibrate and validate a campus stormwater model, incorporating real time flow monitors on campus
• How has the Strategy been used in projects like the Daylighting of Guichon Creek and the development of the Trades and Technology Complex.

Presenters:

– Caroline Charbonneau, MASc, PEng; Stormwater Engineer
– Andrew Kolper, PEng; Senior Hydrotechnical Engineer
