Electrical systems in a mass timber building: Design challenges and opportunities

October 9 from 2:30 pm to 3:45 pm PDT

A Living Labs Lecture: October 9, 2024

Over the last few months, work has been continuing to install the curtain wall assemblies and encapsulate the mass timber on the Tall Timber Student Housing project.

Now with this complete, attention can turn more fully to the building’s mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. In a building as complex as student housing systems like generators, lighting and lighting controls, security and alarm systems are all part of the project electrical design.

In this Living Labs lecture WSP who are the electrical consultants for Tall Timber Student Housing will explore their role in this major project integrating these crucial electrical systems in the building’s design.

Topics will include the design challenges of developing and installing electrical systems for a mass timber building, coordination with the consultant team, and what the new generation of smart buildings means for electrical systems.

Presenters:

  • Andrew Tashiro, Senior Principal, Buildings, WSP
  • Kelvin Siu, Electrical Engineer, Buildings, WSP
  • Johnson Huang, Senior Engineer, ICT & Security Specialist, Buildings, WSP
