Sector Partnerships

Upskilling to meet industry innovation

Industry Services is actively working with a number of industry sectors to support upskilling the workforce to meet the growing needs and respond to sector innovation. By collaborating with industry leaders, we can provide training that fills existing gaps in currently available training programs.

Modern methods of construction education

In partnership with Natural Resources Canada and industry stakeholders across Canada, Industry Services launched Modern Methods of Construction Education (MMC Edu), a national platform advancing training in mass timber, offsite, and prefabricated construction. Through curriculum development and growing network of educators and industry partners, MMC Edu is building the workforce needed for Canada’s transition to low-carbon construction.

Talent pipeline for ACE

The Certificate in Essential Technical Skills for Architecture, Construction and Engineering (ACE) was developed with direct input from industry with the goal of attracting more young people and newcomers to BC to the design-build sector.

BCIT’s ACE industry partners have played an essential role from the beginning in helping design the focus of the education and work experience – all with the goal of preparing students with entry level skills that will allow them to grow into a valued team member in their paid internship positions (and potentially beyond) while helping them determine their career pathway.

Partnership Highlights

Training shipbuilders

In 2019, BCIT’s School of Construction in partnership with Seaspan’s Vancouver Shipyard, launched the three-week New Marine Construction for Welders course, developed specifically to raise the weld quality level demonstrated by marine welders.  The course prepares both new hire and experienced welders for new construction shipbuilding and ship repair, providing them with a marine-specific set of skills required by employers such as Seaspan.
