Zero Energy & Emissions Building (ZEB) Learning Centre offers a variety of microcredential programs with flexible schedules that help you quickly gain new industry skills and knowledge. Our microcredential programs are short, for-credit, modular programs that are made up of a series of flexible courses you can take at your own pace.

We offer the following microcrediential programs:

Applying to a microcredential program

Students do not require a formal application to complete a microcredential program. To take a microcredential program, simply register for each course individually as outlined under the program matrix. Each course completed includes formal assessment, which can be combined towards credit for microcredential programs.

Length of microcredential programs

Our currently available microcredential programs are designed to be taken across 2 terms and completed within 8 months. Courses are flexibly designed to be delivered online with virtual live sessions and independent work on a varied schedule of weekday afternoons and evenings.

Applied Circular Economy: Zero Waste Buildings

The Applied Circular Economy: Zero Waste Buildings microcredential is for professionals to deliver the low-impact buildings through material recovery and salvage, design for disassembly, and construction material flow analysis.

This program is for everyone, but designed with these professionals in mind: architects and home designers, builders and general contractors, tradespeople, and project managers.

Essentials Net-Zero and Passive House Construction

The Essentials Net-Zero and Passive House Construction microcredential is for individuals who want to gain the skills and knowledge to construct high-performance buildings to meet the BC Energy Step Code, Net-Zero Energy, and Passive House standards.

This program is for everyone, but designed with these professionals in mind: architects and home designers, builders and general contractors, tradespeople, building officials, energy advisors, project managers and site supervisors.

The Essentials Net-Zero and Passive House Construction microcredential is listed with TradeUpBC, an initiative for tradespeople to cultivate a future trades workforce that is resilient, inclusive, and adaptable to both rapid and incremental changes in job requirements across BC by offering post-secondary courses and microcredentials in key areas of demand.

Principles of Regenerative Building

The Principles of Regenerative Building microcredential is for individuals who want to deliver low-impact buildings needed to achieve net zero energy and carbon targets and enhance the building’s resilience.

This program is for everyone, but designed with these professionals in mind: architects and home designers, builders and general contractors, tradespeople, building officials, energy advisors, project managers and site supervisors.

Residential Air to Air Heat Pump Specialist

Participants of the Residential Air to Air Heat Pump Specialist Microcredential program will develop applied knowledge and skills — while learning from a team of industry instructors, and completing practical design and installation learning activities. This microcredential specifically incorporates emerging best practices and design considerations to ensure quality heat pump system installations that meet homeowner expectations, and provide heating and cooling during extreme weather events.

Supervising Net-Zero and Passive House Construction

The Supervising Net-Zero and Passive House Construction microcredential is for individuals in the construction industry or those who have recently completed a related construction program and seek to gain the skills, knowledge, and tools unique to supervising construction on Net-Zero, Net-Zero-Ready, or Passive House construction projects.

This program is for everyone, but designed with these professionals in mind: general contractors, builders, project managers, site superintendents, site supervisors, trades foreman/woman, and tradespeople.

The Supervising Net-Zero and Passive House Construction microcredential is listed with TradeUpBC, an initiative for tradespeople to cultivate a future trades workforce that is resilient, inclusive, and adaptable to both rapid and incremental changes in job requirements across BC by offering post-secondary courses and microcredentials in key areas of demand.

Whole-Building Life Cycle Assessment Professional

The Whole-Building Life Cycle Assessment Professional microcredential provides the knowledge and skills needed to effectively use LCA in design decisions for works of construction. Developed in partnership with the Athena Sustainable Materials Institute, this microcredential consists of four courses delivered online by experienced LCA professionals.

This program is for everyone, but designed with these professionals in mind: architects, building designers, engineers, energy modelers, energy advisors, and project managers. Courses are typically offered once per year starting in the Fall term (Sept – Dec).
