Covers basic first aid with rescuer C.P.R. Successful participants will receive WCB Occupational First Aid Level 1 Certification. Personal identification must be presented to the instructor.

Provides forklift operator training to those with little or no experience operating lift-trucks. Successful participants will receive Counterbalanced (Class 1, 4 and 5) Lift-truck Operator Certification valid for two years. This program meets current WCB guidelines and CSA standards for lift-truck operators. Workbook included. Prerequisite: Driving experience.

Students will be able to identify the alphabet lines, identify the three most commonly used orthographic views, identify isometric drawings, identify types of working drawings, make three way sketches of simple objects, and interpret technical drawings. The course includes lecture, hands on sessions as well as self paced assignments and tests.

A key component of the program is an integrated trade's research project directed by the student within their chosen field or industry: their own search for knowledge, expertise and individual contacts allows the student the opportunity to realistically assess the actuality of their educational and/or employment choice. Comparison studies reveal the complexities of the market trends and their impact and response to external and economic pressures. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to complete a market research paper on their chosen trade. Students will develop a job search portfolio that includes "blue collar" resume, cover letter and reference statements. Effective and efficient communication skills are essential elements in acquiring and retaining a career in a highly competitive job market environment. This course is designed to increase a student's ability to prepare and practice for trade specific job applications and interview processes.

Students are required to find a suitable employer in order to participate in an approved unpaid work experience module. The work experience component ensures each student experiences first hand the day to day realities of the work situation. l Industry Tours are scheduled to provide a bigger picture of the needs of Industry and possible opportunities for employment.

This course covers the operation of oxy-acetylene torches, including: safety, ignition, flame types, shut down and storage of equipment. Applications of the oxy-acetylene torch for heating, cutting and welding will be covered during practical exercises. This course includes assignments, homework, and tests.

A series of in class session as well hands on in-the-shop training that encompass approximately twenty different Trades Training/Technical Studies programs taught at BCIT campuses. Lessons in safe care and use of hand tools, power tools, shop machinery will be taught, Applied Science will be covered. Students are placed in a workshop environment with a journeyed instructor where they will perform a number of tasks to gain experience in each trade. Each area will include an overview of the industry covering, apprenticeship and career opportunities.

This course consists of sessions in applied basic mathematics; students will be expected to complete math assignments in the following areas: whole numbers, fractions, decimals, measurements, ratios, conversions, exponents, equations, perimeter, area, volume and geometry. Students are required to complete hands-on applied math sessions as well as self paced assignments and tests.

This course provides an overview of the Workers Compensation Board Regulations and how it applies to industry. The regulations for Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems will be reviewed; students will receive certification for WHIMIS upon completion of this course. An in depth look into safety in the workplace focusing on personal safety, ladders and scaffolds, fall arrest procedures and adoption of strategies for dealing with unsafe work practices. This course includes theory assignments and practical exercises.
