Airport Master Planning and Certification
This introductory course will review the process of Master Planning at airports and the requirements for certification of airports in Canada. Students will complete a thorough analysis of a potential airport site based on an analysis of the aviation demand, the environmental impact of aviation operations in the surrounding area, the economic effect on the airports' community and other relevant factors. Aerodrome Standards and Recommended Practices
The focus of this course is to develop a solid understanding of the Aerodrome Standards and Recommended Practices required by Transport Canada to develop and maintain a certified aerodrome in Canada. CARS Part III Subpart 2 and Guidelines for the Development of an Airport Operations Manual will be covered in detail. Prerequisites: AIRC 1004

Airport Safety and Emergency Preparedness
This course will develop understanding of the relationship of effective safety programs and successful aviation operations with a focus on accident prevention and the associated concepts of risk management. Topics will include aviation safety programs, reporting systems, audits, accident/ incident investigation techniques, and a review of Canadian Aviation Regulations related to Emergency planning and response.

COMM 2203 |
Business and Technical Reports
This communication course teaches the business writing skills needed to produce effective business and technical reports: inspection, trip, incident, and progress reports, proposals, feasibility studies, formal reports, oral reports, summaries and graphics. NOTE: Students scoring below "C+" in level 1 COMM are required to take COMM 2003 instead of COMM 2203. To make up for a full-time diploma program level 2 COMM course, students must take both COMM 2202 (or COMM 2002) and COMM 2203 (or COMM 2003). If you have BCIT full-time diploma program level 1 COMM course credit, email cecomm@bcit.ca to apply for approval to register. Prerequisite: Students must have one of the following: 1) a final grade of 70% or better in BCIT level 1 COMM (ie: COMM 1100 or COMM 1103 or COMM 1106 or COMM 1120; or 2) a score of 70 or better in COMM 0015; or 3) an OFFICIAL transfer credit granted for BCIT level 1 or level 2 COMM course with a final grade of 70% or better (refer to http://www.bcit.ca/admission/transfer/).

Air Navigation and Air Traffic Services
This course outlines the air navigation system in Canada and the procedures associated with air traffic services. Participants will learn about the role NavCan plays in the provision of air navigation services to domestic and international aviation operators. Relevant standards, regulations and recommended practices will be covered. The role that Transport Canada plays in maintaining safe airspace management and operations will also be covered.

Terminal and Groundside Planning, Design and Capacity
This course will focus on the systems approach for analyzing, designing and operating the terminal and landside facilities and infrastructure at an airport. Students will design a new holding room based on the requirements of the Northwest Regional Airport (Terrace) using IATA standards and requirements. Students will collect data, analyze the data and propose the terminal and curbside requirements for a large scale international airport and medium sized private jet/fixed based operator airport. Prerequisites: AIRC 1004

Airport Maintenance
This course provides an overview of policies, standards, operational procedures and processes required to effectively maintain airport facilities, systems and infrastructure. Topics will include runway, taxiway and apron, marking and navigation equipment operational safety checks and inspections and mitigation of wildlife incursions using habitat control techniques. A detailed description of processes, methods and technology used by airports to maintain a safe operating environment will be covered. Prerequisites: AIRC 1004
