Course Overview
This course provides students with the minimum requirements for diagnosing and treating various sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Students will be Registered Nurses or students enrolled in an accredited nursing program, who wish to become certified in the practice realm of Sexually Transmitted Infection Management (STIM) as set out by the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia (CRNBC). This course will include a 20 – 24 hour preceptor-led practicum. Within the scope of nursing practice with clients experiencing, or at risk for STI, students will learn various clinical skills designated as certified practice. This is important because some STI syndromes or infections may be asymptomatic. Comprehensive assessment integrates history or present illness and review of system into the sexual history when appropriate. Students will be entering into the workforce and will already have a preceptorship arranged in their community (with their current employer or other practitioner in the community) BCIT will ensure the preceptor and placement meets the requirements for CRNBC certification. If you are taking this course for professional development only and do not require the clinical portion, please register into NSPN 7735.
