Course Overview
A collaborative effort between BCIT Biotechnology, the Greater Vancouver School Districts and various local biotechnology companies to provide Grade 10, 11 and 12 students with an opportunity to learn what biotechnology is and carry out hands-on exploration of the techniques used in biotechnology. Students spend five days working in a modern life sciences lab performing hands-on experiments in microbiology, plant science, genetics and cell biology, and also visit a biotechnology company to learn more about what these companies do and what careers in this area are like.

- Must be in Grade 10, 11, or 12.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Understand what biotechnology is and how it fits into life sciences research.
- Describe some of the techniques and tools used in biotechnology.
- Know the applications of biotechnology in areas such as health, agriculture and the environment.
- Have hands-on experience with biotechnology and life sciences research techniques such as DNA isolation, PCR, aseptic culture of bacterial and mammalian cells, and plant propagation.
