Yes. In addition to a highly skilled expertise, the BSCE’s research infrastructure includes high end technical equipment, testing facilities and state-of-the-art simulation models. Please look at facilities.
The BSCE can serve your R&D needs best because we conduct leading edge applied research and establish best practices for the industry in building science and building engineering. We provide the industry with a third-party proof-of-concept to foster the development and application of innovative technologies. We can maximize the translation of research outcomes into tangible benefits in sustainable building design and construction by fostering multidisciplinary collaboration for the advancement of building technologies.
Either the client or the BSCE can initiate communication. Clients facing a building science related challenge in their respective industry can contact us with their specific type of the problem, required type of collaboration and the time frame. The BSCE also contacts industries and public funding offices with proposals which it believes are of paramount importance to the industry and the general public.
Yes. The BSCE and its researchers are eligible for public funding from agencies such as the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) to launch research collaborations with industry partners on projects that apply to the BSCE’s expertise. Ask us how this collaboration can be arranged.
Yes. Based on the demand by industry BSCE can provide a short term trainings on newly developed advanced simulation tools, monitoring and modeling of energy efficiency of buildings, risk assessment strategies and building life cycle design. Occasionally, BSCE announces some refresher courses or newly-implemented practices training to interested parts of the building science community.
Companies who made a financial contributions will be fully acknowledged in all published articles and presentations regarding the project. Projects with an intellectual property application on the horizon can be kept confidential until the patent filing.
It depends on the project and type of collaboration. Some projects can be finalized within a few weeks or months if they are projects like material, component or building system testing. However, the BSCE is usually engaged with projects which take several months or years and require the involvement of BSCE researchers and Master of Applied Science graduate students. These projects can include developing specific models, laboratory investigation and field monitoring.
Initial consultations are free of charge. Once an agreement is reached between the client and the BSCE on the type of collaboration, type of equipment, and the facility and expertise required, the cost of the R&D can be evaluated.
Generally, findings are published in scientific journals and conference publications and final reports are submitted to the client. With the client’s consent, the project’s final outcome and recommendations could be available on the BSCE website.
