FMGT 7121 - Advanced Accounting

This rigorous technical-based course introduces the conceptual basis for consolidated accounting, and develops the technical application of advanced financial reporting issues including consolidation accounting and reporting, variable interest entities, joint venture accounting, foreign currency transactions and hedge accounting, translation and consolidation of financial statements stated in foreign currencies, segmented reporting and not-for-profit entities. The principal consolidation theory applied is that promulgated by International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). FMGT 7210 - Advanced Management Accounting

This course will examine, in depth, topical areas from the discipline of management accounting. The emphasis is on why and how the various concepts learned in the previous 2 cost accounting courses and other advanced level management accounting concepts are applied in business environment. The course examines: the strategies used by manufacturing and service entities as well as not-for-profit and government organizations; the characteristics of effective management control systems that are in place to motivate managers and employees to implement strategies; motivating behaviour through the understanding of agency theory, rules of ethics, and the need for trust and goal congruency; the use of budgeting process as a tool to implement strategy; the use of activity-based management for goal congruency; performance measurements on strategic business units; measuring and controlling assets employed; assessing performance over the value chain functions; strategy maps and the use of the balanced scorecard in for-profit sector, and in government and other organizations; the use of transfer prices to promote goal congruency in business units; long-term spending decisions to develop future capabilities and capital budgeting; and short-term decision tools such as regression, linear programming, expected values, decision-trees and analysis of uncertainty and risk. The students will also analyze applicable case material and videos, and research businesses in order to identify and comprehend the applied management accounting practices. A number of cases will be assigned as individual and team assignments. There is also a project requiring the students to: research specific firms; discuss the strategies, the management control systems that are put in place to ensure that strategies are implemented and the effectiveness of the control systems; identify the performance measures that are used in the firms; implement benchmarking process; create the balanced scorecard; make recommendations for operational improvements; record the above in a term paper; and make presentations to the class. FMGT 7310 - Advanced Auditing

This course addresses issues and challenges faced by the auditing profession in today's environment including the assessment of risk of an audit, the use of computer technology in completing the audit file, and the increasing litigation against the profession. Students will be expected to use the assigned textbook and other sources to research selected topics. Case studies will be used extensively. FMGT 7410 - Taxation of Close Corporations

This is an advanced course in corporate income tax, focusing on the tax planning needs of private corporations and their shareholders. In this course, the student will acquire the foundation tax knowledge and basic research skills needed to be able to do corporate tax related work at a professional level. This is achieved through a combination of lectures, assigned readings, practice in the application of the law to practical problems, the use of income tax software for both compliance and research purposes, and training in tax research and tax writing. Topics include the computation of corporate taxes, tax integration, owner compensation, corporate re-organizations, surplus distributions, partnerships, trusts, structuring business sales and acquisitions, international business expansion, as well as issues concerning tax compliance, planning and avoidance. Prerequisites: Completion of FMGT 3410 and FMGT 4410 with a minimum average grade of 65%

FMGT 7510 - Advanced Finance

This course stresses the application of financial strategies to financing challenges faced by business enterprises. Using a predominantly small business, case-based approach, students are introduced to various areas of business operations which drive financing requirements, or exacerbate financial challenges and then examine means of satisfying those requirements or modifying operations to minimize financial challenges. Prerequisites: Completion of FMGT 3510 and FMGT 4510 with a minimum average grade of 65%

FMGT 7520 - Business Valuation

This course will give students an introduction to the field of business valuation as it is practiced today in Canada. Students will examine the many uses of business valuations, business valuation terminology, sources of information, and valuation principles and approaches. Working with realistic case material, students will learn how to research general economic and specific industry conditions, analyse company financial and operational information and prepare and analyse valuation calculations. Prerequisites: Completion of FMGT 3510 and FMGT 4510 with a minimum average grade of 65%

FMGT 7710 - Management Information Systems

In this course, students will gain an understanding of the relationship between information technology, accounting information systems, business strategy and organizational improvement. They will examine information technology as an enabler and facilitator of business strategy and as an accounting and control tool to track performance and improve managerial decision-making. Cases and assignments will focus on small- to medium-sized Canadian organizations looking for appropriate solutions to information technology and accounting issues.
