Supporting wellbeing from policy to practice

Supporting wellbeing practice at BCIT

As students’ needs continue to evolve, a wholecampus approach remains central to strengthening supports and shaping a supportive learning environment that enables student success. To advance our commitment to fostering vibrant and inclusive communities at BCITI’m pleased to share an update on two new Student Wellbeing Action Plan resources now available to enhance implementation across the Institute.

IDEAS lens in Policy and Procedures Guide

We have expanded our approach to embedding systemic wellbeing by introducing a set of guiding questions that integrate Indigenization, inclusivity, diversity, equity, accessibility, student wellbeing, and sustainability (collectively referred to as the IDEAS Lens) into policy development or revision.

Approved for adoption by the Education Council Policy Committee and developed in alignment with the Policy Review Team, this guide provides reflection prompts and practical examples that help teams assess impacts, identify barriers, and meaningfully include the perspectives of those directly affected by policy decisions

Supporting students in distress: Response guide for employees

Employees are often among the first to engage with students experiencing challenges that may affect their learning and wellbeing. The updated Response Guide offers in-the-moment guidance and clear referral pathways to facilitate early intervention.

Developed collaboratively with Campus SecurityCounselling & Student DevelopmentStudent Life (Early Assist)Health ServicesIndigenous Initiatives, and academic representatives across BCIT’s Schools and campuses, this response guide also reflects our shared responsibility to support the wellbeing of both learners and employees.

I look forward to continuing our work together to build healthier campus culture and ensure students can easily access the services they need, wherever they seek help. If your department is interested in exploring training or further collaboration, please connect with me

Thank you for your continued dedication to student success, and for the care you bring to this work every day.
