Overview – BCIT ZEBLC activities

A short overview of what we did in 2019-2020.

Hands-on Net Zero Energy Training

Nine women and gender diverse electricians and five Indigenous women exploring trades careers came together to install a solar panel array on the teacher’s cabin. With recent envelope upgrades, this solar panel array should generate as much energy in a year as the cabin needs, making it Net Zero.

Indigenous youth learned about high-performance buildings while completing part of an envelope retrofit of the teacher’s cabin at the Cheakamus Centre. Kílila is the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) word for butterfly signifying the power of transformation.

In the fall of 2023, a group of Indigenous youth completed a renovation on one of the cabins at the Cheakamus Centre which is used by many school groups throughout the year. The We Are One training program is a collaborative project among the Cheakamus Centre, Aboriginal Housing Management Association (AHMA), and BCIT with culturally appropriate courses that empower Indigenous youth to connect with their culture, build confidence and skills related to sustainable building construction.

We helped with the renovation of a few cabins in Squamish (British Columbia – Canada).  The renovations took un-insulated kids camp cabins with 12 ACH50 to Step 3 of the BC Energy Step Code using an exterior air barrier and exterior insulation strategy combined with a series of Lunos heat recovery ventilation units.

Part 3 High Performance Building Enclosures

We worked with Flynn Canada to build a series of Part 3 mockups showcasing assemblies that would meet step 4 of the BC energy Step Code

Featuring the ZEB Learning Centre

The Fully Charged Show is a clean energy and electric vehicle channel with the goal to educate, encourage, and explain that a very high percentage of the energy that the global population demands can, and should, come from ‘clean’ sources. One of their hosts, Imogen met with the ZEB team and Mitsubishi Electric in the lab to learn that net zero is about so much more than solar, heat pumps and insulation.

The Fully Charged show visited the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) to find out about Air to Air (A2A) Heat Pumps. They joined us in the A2A heat pump lab on how they are being adopted in BC to support emissions reduction targets and meet heating and cooling needs.

Exploring Alternatives is a social media project dedicated to living large with less. We were fortunate to have founders Mat & Danielle stop by our lab to produce a video on the ABC of Passive House. Thanks Mat & Danielle for promoting the work we do.

The Canada Green Building Council named the BCIT Zero Energy Buildings Learning Centre “Inspired Educator of the Year (2021)”.

The BC Housing Building Excellence Research & Education Grants program supports initiatives that improve the quality of residential construction and strengthens consumer protection for new home buyers. We are very flattered to be featured in one of the program video.

The Build Show with Matt Risinger is dedicated to Building Science and Fine Craftsmanship. Matt is a builder in Austin, TX. We were fortunate to have Matt and his team stop by our lab to produce a Build Show episode.
