Integrating Universal Design for Learning principles

UDL_StrategicPlan_update_July13

We are sharing an update on the Strategic Plan deliverable, “Enhance faculty capacity to create inclusive learning environments by integrating Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles into course design.” This important work supports our commitment to transform teaching and learning at BCIT.

BCIT is dedicated to creating learning environments that reduce barriers and increase access for all students.

To support this goal, we have released two UDL resources that support faculty and staff to learn more about UDL and how we can use this framework to adapt our teaching practices and program structures to support accessible learning for our students. The first resource is a UDL website that provides a high-level introduction to UDL, and the second is a deeper dive training course called UDL Unpacked found on the Employee Learning Hub.

These resources provide useful training to help us identify ways we are already supporting accessible education for our students and inspire and guide us to find even more ways to reduce barriers to learning. By implementing UDL principles, we support students towards successful achievement in their learning journey.

Moving forward, we will continue to expand on the website and the training course. We welcome feedback on both these resources to inform continued improvement. Both platforms have a place to submit suggestions.

Over the summer, we encourage you to visit the UDL website or work through the UDL Unpacked course – for which you’ll receive a badge towards the IDEAS Lens Learning Badge.

Thank you,

Claudine Warburton and Michele Bridge, Instructional Development Consultants, Learning and Teaching Centre
