According to Engineers Canada, women are still underrepresented in the workplace. In 2022, women accounted for 48 percent of entry level corporate roles, but this number drops significantly in engineering professions—only 20 percent of newly licensed engineers in Canada identify as women.
As part of BCIT’s mission in building an inclusive future, the Institute is proud to launch its annual Women in Engineering (WiE) campaign during the month of March. In collaboration with the School of Construction and the Environment, School of Energy, and School of Transportation, the BCIT WiE campaign coincides with National Engineering Month and International Women’s Day in March, and is designed to encourage a supportive environment for women in engineering. This year’s WiE campaign returns with a panel discussion, as well as the addition of two new entrance awards.
Inspirational journeys of women in engineering
The WiE campaign features notable BCIT alumnae and students as they share their inspirational journeys in the engineering profession. This campaign leans into the wide variety of engineering programs offered at BCIT, and how these programs equip learners with the tools they need to reimagine Canada’s most prominent industries.
This year, BCIT will be hosting an in-person engineering panel discussion on March 29 from 5-6:30 pm PST at Town Square A, BCIT Burnaby Campus. Panelists include:
- Alyssa Hermann, P.Eng., M.Eng, Project Engineer, Binnie
- Ana Cross, Marine Engineering Cadet, BC Ferries
- Jessica Wilson, Assistant Instructor, Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology, BCIT
- Karen Kan, EIT, Associate Design Engineering Specialist, Fluor
- Megan Gent, EIT, Mining Engineer in Training, Victoria Gold Corp
As well, Krizia Marban, Project Manager, McElhanney, will join the event as a guest speaker.
The Engineering Panel and Info Session will speak about the highlights and challenges of their rewarding careers and will impart their advice on how to leverage BCIT’s hands-on learning and industry connections to excel in the field.

Entrance Awards to support engineering students
BCIT offers a large variety of awards and bursaries for students.
