Our People: Meet Sebastian Arancibia Leiva

Sebastian Arancibia Leiva

Putting people at the core of everything we do is paramount at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT). We’re proud to be a people-first organization, where employees are supported, valued, and empowered to thrive, both personally and professionally. Through the Our People series on BCIT News, we celebrate the passion, expertise, and impact of individuals who help shape a better future at BCIT and beyond.

Meet Sebastian Arancibia Leiva, who is Marketing Coordinator for the BCIT School of Construction and the Environment. Sebastian’s journey with BCIT began as a student in the Broadcast and Online Journalism program, where he developed a deep appreciation for storytelling and communication. As part of the experiential learning opportunities that are integrated into his BCIT program, Sebastian completed an internship with the BCIT Marketing and Communications department. It was through this internship that it became clear just how much he valued the collaborative culture and real-world impact of the BCIT community. That experience paved the way for his current role, which he began in December 2023.

Now, as a proud BCIT alum and employee, Sebastian brings creativity, dedication, and a strong sense of purpose to every project—continuing to give back to the Institute that helped launch his career.

Describe what your job entails

I manage and create content for all School of Construction and Environment‘s social media channels—you can find us on Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn. I support my team (shoutout to Marita Luk and Lauren Swanson—both icons and allies) with event planning, and provide marketing support across all of our programs.

What does Pride mean to you?

For me, celebrating Pride evokes the same feelings I experience when I look at myself in the mirror after a long time without doing so. It is a moment of realization where you say, ‘Hey, this is me, this is how I am. I no longer have to hide; I can be who I was born to be.’ It reminds me of what a wise woman and 2SLGBTQIIA+ icon once said, “I’m beautiful, in my way, ’cause God makes no mistakes, I’m on the right track baby, I was born this way.” That wise woman is Lady Gaga, by the way.

How do you celebrate Pride?

I love Pride in Vancouver. Back home in Chile, Pride falls in winter, so it usually rains during the parade. In Vancouver, there are so many cool things to do thanks to the nice weather. My favourite one is to go watch drag performances at the park.

What’s your go-to Pride song?

I have many Pride songs. The classic ones: Coming Out by Diana Ross, Express Yourself by Madonna, and Nueva Era by Javiera Mena.

However, in my humble opinion, the Pride album of this generation is Brat by Charli XCX. Brat is all about having fun, and I think when you’re having fun, you are being your most authentic self.

Who inspires you?

As part of my journey to learn to love myself, I must say that I’m my favourite icon and reference. I’m proud of the adult I’ve become. I hope young Seb is proud of me, too.

What advice would you give to someone just starting their journey in understanding Pride or allyship?

To all my queens, kings, and royalty, you are here on this earth to be yourself, that’s it.
