I am sharing an update on the Strategic Plan deliverable, “Assess BCIT community’s response to the Indigenous Vision, determine what has been accomplished and what needs to be addressed to enhance partnerships with Indigenous communities.” This important work supports our commitment to enrich industry and partner experiences at BCIT.
In the past three years, Indigenous Initiatives & Partnerships (IIP) has seen an increase of 38% in the number of Indigenous students accessing the Indigenous Gathering Place. There has been an 85% increase in Indigenous youth participation and the number of high schools participating in IIP youth events has doubled. IIP has also hosted many events from a garden harvest, lunches, cultural activities, and celebrations.
Since 2020, Indigenous student enrolment has increased steadily. BCIT remains committed to increasing access and retention of Indigenous students. It is vital that all BCIT students and employees understand the true history of Canada and how we can all move forward together to advance reconciliation.
IIP is currently leading the consultation and engagement to update the BCIT Indigenous Vision. We encourage all students and employees to attend the Indigenous Vision consultation sessions. Share your thoughts on how BCIT has addressed the seven principles outlined in the current Indigenous Vision and offer recommendations for what you would like to see reflected in the new Vision.
We are grateful to be able to continue to work with Schools, departments, and service areas to advance their Reconciliation plans. We look forward to every student lunch and to support students as they fulfill their dreams.
