The British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) has appointed Rachel Schatz, RSE, Plumber and Gasfitter Class B, as Department Head of Piping Trades in the School of Construction and the Environment.

Rachel brings more than 20 years of experience in the plumbing and gas industry, including more than 15 years of field experience. Since joining BCIT in 2019, she has taught in the Plumbing and Gasfitter Apprenticeship program, supporting students through applied, hands-on learning grounded in industry practice.

Her combination of industry and teaching experience positions her well to lead the Piping Trades programs, including Piping Foundation, Plumber, Steamfitter/Pipefitter, and Gasfitter training.

“Rachel has consistently demonstrated a passion for showcasing student talent and fostering a strong sense of community within the department,” said Michael Currie, Interim Dean, School of Construction and the Environment.

In addition to her teaching, Rachel has been a strong advocate for inclusion in the skilled trades and is committed to creating a respectful and supportive learning environment for students and faculty.

As Department Head, Rachel will work closely with faculty and staff to support program delivery, strengthen student learning, and maintain strong connections with industry.

“I am proud to step into this role surrounded by a wonderful and supportive team,” said Rachel. “I look forward to building on the strong foundation already in place while continuing to foster a safe and thriving learning environment.”

BCIT thanks outgoing Department Head Steve Gilles for his leadership and contributions to the program.

Congratulations, Rachel!
