I am sharing an update on the Strategic Plan deliverable, “Develop a comprehensive Internationalization Plan.” This important work supports our commitment to transform teaching and learning at BCIT.
BCIT is developing an Internationalization Plan to expand global learning opportunities, strengthen international partnerships, and connect international engagement with teaching, applied research, and industry. The plan will guide a coordinated approach across BCIT, supporting student success, faculty and staff engagement, equitable access to international experiences, and long-term institutional sustainability.
We have developed a strategic framework with six priorities, supported by proposed initiatives and measures of success. In 2026, BCIT secured more than $1 million through Taiwan Ministry of Education initiatives, welcomed 82 learners across five summer training cohorts, and exceeded its initial target for incoming Study Abroad participation. We are also working with the School of Construction and the Environment on customized mining training proposals for Mongolia, the School of Energy on potential engineering and technology program delivery in China, and the School of Health Sciences on a technical education proposal in Egypt.
International engagement creates opportunities for faculty to share BCIT’s applied expertise, learn from international partners, and bring new technologies, industry practices, and global perspectives into teaching and learning. By expanding equitable access to international experiences, including opportunities for Indigenous and underrepresented learners, we can help students develop intercultural competencies, adaptability, and practical skills that strengthen their career readiness in British Columbia and around the world.
We will continue working with Schools, students, faculty, and administrative departments to refine the plan, establish implementation priorities and measures of success, and work toward formal approval by March 2027. This work also includes assessing research security, partner due diligence, and applicable federal requirements to support responsible and sustainable international engagement.
Faculty and staff interested in developing international learning experiences, training initiatives, or academic partnerships are encouraged to connect with Global Partnerships.
Thank you,
Derek Lemieux
