Launch of People Vision with focus on culture, growth, and effectiveness

I am sharing an update on the Strategic Plan deliverable I’m leading, which falls under our commitment to empower people and the initiative for the launch of People Vision with focus on culture, growth, and effectiveness.

We are excited to be developing BCIT’s first People Vision, a framework for our efforts to continue to support our development, enhance our workplace, and honour our ongoing commitment to the Institute.

Work began in late 2019 with reviews of employee surveys and our people practices and since 2020 included iterative discussions with colleagues across the organization. The result of these efforts will be a comprehensive People Vision, an employee-centred representation of the BCIT Strategic Plan.

To further explore our goals in these areas, we have:

  • Held five focus groups in January 2021 for each focus area with select group of participants across the Institute and
  • Held five world café sessions in June 2021 which were open to the BCIT community.

These sessions enabled us to explore current state and initiatives, priority future actions and possible metrics to measure our progress.

Five key focus areas have been identified in the People Vision:

  • Talent (Practices that help BCIT attract, develop, promote, and retain employees, enabling both personal growth and institutional capacity building)
  • Empowerment (An approach that equips and enables employees to work productively and confidently in ways that advance the mission of BCIT)
  • Connectedness (Mechanisms that leverage individual employee contributions in ways that yield more than the sum of the parts, inspiring a shared sense of purpose)
  • Wellness (Support for our people in prioritizing their health by leading a balanced lifestyle, underpinned by the creation of a workplace where employees can thrive)
  • Accountability (Systems that motivate and support responsibility and initiative in how employees fulfil their current roles and prepare themselves for future roles)

Over the summer, we will be finalizing the year one metrics and action items, and anticipate launching the final People Vision in the fall.

As the development of the People Vision has been collaborative and consultative, successful implementation of the People Vision is dependent on continued partnership.

We invite you to connect with any of the People Vision team leads to share thoughts on the focus areas:

  • Talent (Lisa Ryan and Brian Hosier)
  • Empowerment (Chris Hudson and Dean Hildebrand)
  • Connectedness (Kelly Friday and Allison Rugge)
  • Wellness (Heather Thomas and Shereen Tayles)
  • Accountability (Jas Parmar and Jennifer Figner)

Thank you,

Ana Lopez
