On April 23, 2025, BCIT welcomed nearly 70 2S/LGBTQIA+ tradespeople, allies, students, alumni, and industry partners to Pride on the Tools. An afternoon dedicated to celebrating diversity and building an inclusive community in the skilled trades.
Hosted in partnership with Pride BCIT, the ConnectHER Hub, and the BC Centre for Women in the Trades (BCCWITT), the event offered inspiring keynote messages, hands-on activities, resource booths, and a show-stopping trades-themed drag performance. The energy was electric as participants connected, shared stories, and celebrated their identities in a welcoming space.
The event was emceed by a dynamic lineup of speakers and leaders: Craig Larkins (VRCA), Justin Saint (Pride BCIT), Darren Danbrook (IBEW Local 213), Donna Anderson (SkilledTradesBC), and Chelsea Barron (BCIT). Together, they highlighted the importance of visibility and equity in trades education and employment.
Anna Lary, M.Ed, FSR, Master Electrician and founder of Pride on the Tools, shared a powerful message:
“As a tradeswoman with nearly three decades in the field, I’ve experienced firsthand the challenges of exclusion and bias. This event is about creating spaces where 2S/LGBTQIA+ workers can be seen, valued, and respected. We are stronger when everyone has a seat at the table and a voice on the tools.”
Pride on the Tools is part of a growing movement toward equity and representation in the skilled trades, reminding us that diversity drives innovation, retention, and a healthier work culture for all. This event was very much inspired by Southern Alberta Institute of Technology’s Pride in Construction event.
