Our People: Meet Minoo Shariat-Zadeh, P.Eng.

Minoo Shariat-Zadeh receiving the 2025 Employee Excellence Award

Putting people at the core of everything we do is paramount at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT). We’re proud to be a people-first organization, where employees are supported, valued, and empowered to thrive, both personally and professionally.

Through the Our People series on BCIT News, we celebrate the passion, expertise, and impact of individuals who help shape a better future at BCIT and beyond.

Meet Minoo Shariat-Zadeh, P.Eng., Project Leader for the Smart Microgrid Applied Research Team (SMART) at BCIT Applied Research, and a BCIT 2025 Employee Excellence recipient in the Applied Research category – an award that recognizes those who have made an outstanding contribution by advancing knowledge or launching a new research program.

Minoo’s work aims to support Canada’s rural, remote, and Indigenous communities in their transition from diesel through groundbreaking work in microgrid design, energy modeling, and community-driven solutions. Her initiatives, supported by over $2M in grant funding since 2022, reflect a deep commitment to sustainability and impact.

Echoing one of her nominators, “Minoo is a champion of clean energy for communities.”

What does it mean to you to be a 2025 Employee Excellence Award recipient?

It means a great deal; it’s a humbling recognition of the collaborative efforts and passion I bring to my work every day.

Looking back on the past year, what do you think contributed most to you receiving this recognition?

Over the past year, my work has been focused on supporting Indigenous communities in building the skills and capacity needed to participate meaningfully in the clean energy transition. By identifying systemic barriers and co-developing inclusive pathways into the sector, I’ve aimed to ensure that our research and programs reflect the values of equity, sustainability, and long-term community benefit.

I believe this commitment to impact and collaboration played a key role in this recognition.

Is there a particular project, initiative, or achievement from 2024–2025 that you are especially proud of?

One initiative I’m especially proud of from 2024–2025 is securing nearly half a million dollars in funding from the Future Skills Centre to support our work in identifying skills gaps and empowering diverse communities, particularly Indigenous and underrepresented groups, as they transition to the clean energy sector. Through experiential learning, education, and knowledge mobilization activities, this project has created meaningful impact.

I’m equally proud of my team at Smart Microgrid Applied Research Team (SMART), whose dedication and expertise have been instrumental in bringing this vision to life and delivering strong, community-centered outcomes.

How have your colleagues or team supported your success over the past year?

My colleagues and team have been instrumental to everything we’ve accomplished this past year. Their collaboration, trust, and commitment have created an environment where innovation and impact can thrive. Whether through sharing expertise, stepping up during critical project phases, or offering encouragement during challenges, their support has been unwavering, and I’m truly grateful to work alongside such a dedicated and capable group.

What aspect of BCIT’s workplace culture has helped you thrive in your role or project?

BCIT’s culture of applied innovation and cross-disciplinary collaboration has been a key factor in my ability to thrive. The Institute’s support for community-driven initiatives and its commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion have empowered me to pursue meaningful work, especially in advancing Indigenous engagement and clean energy transition.

Having the flexibility to lead impactful projects, alongside a culture that values trust and accountability, has made a significant difference in how I show up in my role.

What’s next for you – any goals, upcoming projects, or aspirations on the horizon?

Looking ahead, I’m committed to supporting my team in advancing Canada’s clean energy transition by championing inclusive, practical, and forward-thinking solutions, particularly for underrepresented communities. I plan to continue contributing to SMART’s work by integrating emerging technologies such as Digital Twins and Artificial Intelligence into our research and projects.

These innovations will enhance our critical infrastructure resilience, expand experiential learning opportunities, and help close knowledge gaps, while also supporting the development of future skill sets needed for a successful transition. This will ensure all Canadians are empowered to participate in building a sustainable energy future.

On a personal note, I’m also grateful that BCIT fosters a culture of support for both professional and personal development, providing access to funding and opportunities that allow me to pursue these ambitions with purpose and confidence.
