Meet Leslie Major, Program Head, Business Analytics, Operations Management, BCIT School of Business + Media, and a BCIT 2026 Employee Excellence recipient in the Teaching Excellence category.
What does it mean to you to be a 2026 Employee Excellence Award recipient?
I feel incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to support students in their learning journeys. It’s truly an honor to be nominated and recognized in this way. I especially want to acknowledge my students—their enthusiasm, dedication, and positive energy in the classroom inspire me every day. This recognition is very much a reflection of their commitment and passion for learning.
Looking back on the past year, what do you think contributed most to you receiving this recognition?
A big part of this comes from our students, who consistently show up eager to learn and engage deeply with the material. Their curiosity and drive make teaching especially rewarding.
I’m also very thankful for the mentorship of Claudine Warburton. Being part of her eLearning Fellowship during COVID had a lasting impact on my approach to teaching—particularly the importance of reflection, continuous improvement, and regularly checking in to ensure students are truly benefiting from the lessons.
In addition, I’m fortunate to work alongside an exceptional team in the School of Business. My colleagues are collaborative, innovative, and always willing to share ideas and improve together. They have helped make me the teacher I am today.
Is there a particular project, initiative, or achievement from 2025–2026 that you are especially proud of?
Stepping into the role of Program Head for the Graduate Certificate in Business Analytics has been a highlight. I’m incredibly proud of the progress our students have made over the year. I am excited to watch them cross the stage next week at convocation.
How have your colleagues or team supported your success over the past year?
Our team has a strong culture of collaboration and knowledge sharing. Everyone is genuinely invested in student success, not just in terms of learning content, but in helping students understand how to apply their knowledge to real-world business challenges. That shared commitment makes a significant difference.
What aspect of BCIT’s workplace culture has helped you thrive in your role or project?
BCIT provides ongoing opportunities for professional growth and development. Through fellowships, certifications, advanced degrees, professional development leave, and new course and program initiatives, there is a strong culture of continuous learning and improvement. I have been consistently supported—both financially and through dedicated leave time—in advancing my development as an educator and professional.
What’s next for you—any goals, upcoming projects, or aspirations on the horizon?
A team of former graduate students and colleagues and I are currently collaborating with a local business on a range of initiatives, including enhancing operational efficiency, strengthening marketing efforts, and refining overall strategy. This partnership provides a valuable opportunity to deliver meaningful impact while also developing practical case studies and future capstone projects for our students.
In addition, I am leading the development of a Data Quality course for the new Associate Certificates in Business Technology, as well as a Simulation course for the Operations and Management Engineering program.
I look forward to continuing to build these partnerships and further expanding experiential learning opportunities for our students.
