The School of Energy is proud to recognize second-year Chemical and Environmental Engineering Technology students Chase Milligan and Oliver Gray, for receiving a 2026 Ocean Wise Microgrant to support their applied environmental research project.

Under the supervision of BCIT Chemistry faculty Dr. Ali Al Jibouri, Chase and Oliver are developing MagneTrap BC, an innovative magnetic filtration system designed to capture and remove microplastics and other suspended contaminants from water. The project aims to investigate the effectiveness of magnetically enhanced treatment technologies as a practical and scalable approach to reducing pollution in aquatic environments.

The research will involve the design, construction, and testing of a laboratory-scale treatment system in BCIT’s School of Energy laboratories. The students will evaluate contaminant removal efficiency, optimize operating conditions, and assess the technology’s potential for protecting freshwater and marine ecosystems.

Through this project, Chase and Oliver will gain hands-on experience in environmental monitoring, water treatment, laboratory experimentation, data analysis, and applied research. The initiative exemplifies the Institute’s commitment to experiential learning by providing students with opportunities to tackle real-world environmental challenges while developing industry-relevant skills.

The project aligns closely with Ocean Wise’s mission to promote healthy and sustainable aquatic ecosystems and highlights the important role that student-led innovation can play in advancing environmental stewardship.
