Dream and Build 2026 celebrates women in skilled trades

Dream & Build 2026

The BCIT ConnectHER Hub partnered with Build a Dream and the Canadian Apprenticeship Forum to strengthen connections, mentorship, and opportunities for women and gender-diverse individuals in skilled trades and STEAM.

From June 5 to 7, 2026, the BCIT ConnectHER Hub collaborated with Build a Dream and the Canadian Apprenticeship Forum to co-host Dream and Build 2026. Dream and Build is a three-day conference celebrating and supporting women and gender-diverse individuals pursuing careers in skilled trades and STEAM. The event brought together tradeswomen, apprentices, employers, educators, industry leaders, and community partners to share knowledge, build connections, and celebrate the contributions of people helping shape the future of these industries.

The conference reflected a shared commitment to advancing the recruitment, retention, and success of women and gender-diverse people across the skilled trades. Through professional development sessions, networking opportunities, and community-building activities, attendees gained practical insights, expanded their professional networks, and connected with peers who understood their experiences.

For many, those connections were among the most meaningful outcomes of the event. Attendees praised the welcoming environment, relevant content, and opportunities to learn from speakers whose experiences resonated with their own.

“One of the most powerful outcomes of Dream and Build wasn’t just what participants learned, but the connections they made. Seeing women in the trades come together, support one another, and build their professional networks reinforced why creating a sense of belonging is such an important part of advancing equity in these industries.”

Some of the most memorable moments happened between sessions. Conversations sparked new friendships, mentorship opportunities, and professional relationships. In one example, five women working as plumbers in the Vancouver area met one another for the first time at Dream and Build. In a field where women remain underrepresented, the opportunity to connect with others who share similar experiences was a powerful reminder of the value of community.

Building connections and creating opportunities

Dream and Build also created opportunities for employers, exhibitors, and industry partners to strengthen relationships and explore new approaches to workforce development. Exhibitors reported meaningful engagement with attendees and identified opportunities for future partnerships, recruitment, and collaboration. Post-event feedback showed a 100 per cent exhibitor satisfaction rate, with all respondents indicating that the conference met or exceeded their expectations.

A standout feature was the Women’s Workwear Fashion Show, which celebrated tradeswomen while showcasing personal protective equipment and workwear designed specifically for women. Beyond the runway, the showcase sparked important conversations about inclusion, representation, workplace safety, and the importance of ensuring workers have access to gear that meets their needs.

Mentorship and community support were also central themes throughout the conference. One apprentice shared how guidance from a Build a Dream mentor helped her navigate significant personal challenges and continue pursuing her career goals. Stories like hers highlight how meaningful support can make a difference—not only in helping individuals overcome barriers, but also in giving them the confidence to keep moving forward.

While Dream and Build lasted three days, the relationships and support networks formed during the event have the potential to make a lasting impact.

For ConnectHER Hub, Dream and Build 2026 demonstrated what is possible when organizations come together around a shared purpose. By creating space for connection, learning, mentorship, and professional growth, the conference helped strengthen pathways for women and gender-diverse individuals to pursue, advance, and thrive in skilled trades and STEAM careers.

We extend our sincere thanks to our partners, sponsors, speakers, exhibitors, volunteers, and attendees for helping make Dream and Build 2026 such a meaningful success. We also gratefully acknowledge the support of EMC and BC Hydro, whose involvement helped contribute to the event’s success.
