On April 10 and 11, 2025, the BCIT ConnectHER Hub, in partnership with the BCIT Zero Energy/Emissions Buildings Learning Centre (ZEBLC), hosted the Cheakamus Solar System Training and Leadership Retreat at the Cheakamus Centre.
Over two days, five Indigenous women from the Squamish Nation Training and Trades Centre and nine senior female electricians, including six electrical contractors, participated in hands-on training focused on solar system installation. The training was delivered by experienced instructors from Riverside Energy Systems, creating an environment that blended technical skill development with leadership growth.
Set against the backdrop of the Cheakamus Centre’s living lab, the retreat provided a unique opportunity to learn sustainable practices in real-world conditions. Participants not only strengthened their technical skills but also built meaningful connections, exchanging knowledge, experiences, and mentorship across different career stages.
The event marked another milestone in the ongoing collaboration between ZEBLC and the Cheakamus Centre to promote high performance building practices.
The success of the Cheakamus Solar System Training and Leadership Retreat reflects the growing momentum toward a more inclusive, skilled, and sustainable future in the construction and energy sectors.
