Celebration of Impact: Empowering students, honouring donors

Celebration of Impact

On October 23, the BCIT community gathered to honour student excellence, donor generosity, and the legacy of leadership at the Celebration of Impact. Hosted by Sean Poole, President of the BCIT Alumni Association, and Cynthia Petrie, Vice President External at BCIT, the event celebrated the power of education, philanthropy, and community.

“This event is about more than recognition. It’s about impact,” remarked Cynthia. “It’s about the ripple effect that happens when students are given opportunities to succeed, when donors invest in education, and when leadership steers a vision that benefits not just BCIT, but entire communities.”

BCIT President, Dr. Jeff Zabudsky emphasized the Institute’s commitment to breaking down financial, logistical, and systemic barriers to education. He highlighted BCIT’s Strategic Plan 2025–2030, which focuses on student success, industry partnership, and greater access and inclusion for learners from all backgrounds.

“Talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not,” stated Jeff. He outlined new efforts in scholarships, bursaries, and tailored supports for Indigenous learners, newcomers, working parents, and first-generation students.

Stories of resilience and gratitude

The highlight of the evening was the student panel, where each participant shared stories of challenges and achievements. They spoke about balancing studies with financial pressures, work, and life responsibilities, and expressed deep gratitude for the encouragement and support made possible by donor-funded awards.

Karsten Brewka, recipient of the Mosaic Forest Entrance Award and student in the Aviation Management and Operations program, shared how his lifelong passion for aviation led him to BCIT’s Aerospace Technology Campus. Moving from Vancouver Island to pursue his studies, he found community in the cohort-based learning environment and hands-on training with real aircraft and industry mentors. His entrance award provided early financial relief during his relocation, easing the transition and helping him focus fully on his studies.

Tarek Chellouf, followed a long-held interest in electronics and after 15 years as a chef and instructor, he enrolled in the Electrical Foundations program at BCIT. He credits the Construction Industry Training Organization of BC Award as providing him crucial financial support as he transitions into a new career path.

Rhylie Balkill, recipient of an In-term Award in the Medical Laboratory Science program, came to BCIT after completing a degree in Microbiology at the University of Calgary, seeking a more practical and collaborative environment. Serving as a student liaison for her cohort, she has developed strong communication and leadership skills while balancing a demanding schedule. Her award helped cover commuting costs from North Vancouver to Burnaby, easing financial pressures and allowing her to stay engaged on campus.

Sophie Hansen, a graduate of the Broadcast and Online Journalism program in the School of Business + Media and valedictorian for her year, shared how her awards transformed her student experience. Today, she works at CBC as a producer and writer. She also manages content for a social media page tied to a documentary series and often collaborates with BCIT alumni. Her documentary “At What Cost? The Legacy of Florence Girard,” produced with her classmates, was recently nominated for a 2025 Webster Award, a milestone she cites as possible thanks to small class sizes, mentorship from faculty, and the confidence bolstered by donor support.

For all, the award recognition was just as meaningful as the financial support, fueling motivation to exceed expectations.

The 2025 Celebration of Impact not only honoured outstanding students and dedicated donors, but showcased how donor support empowers students to excel, expand their ambitions, and become catalysts for change. These recipients are tomorrow’s trailblazers—driving innovation, shaping industries, and fueling the growth of British Columbia’s economy.
