A BCIT Cabinetmaking apprentice has been named Canada’s top post-secondary cabinetmaker after winning gold at the 2026 Skills Canada National Competition.
Michael Merrin captured the gold medal in the postsecondary Cabinetmaking competition while representing Team BC at the national event in Toronto, where the country’s top skilled trades and technology students competed for national titles.
Held annually, the Skills Canada National Competition showcases excellence in the skilled trades and technologies, challenging competitors to demonstrate technical knowledge, precision, problem-solving, and craftsmanship under industry-standard conditions.
Merrin earned the opportunity to represent British Columbia after winning gold at the Skills Canada BC Provincial Competition earlier this year. At the national competition, he outperformed the country’s top cabinetmaking apprentices to claim the national title.
Based in Squamish, Merrin is a Level 4 Cabinetmaking apprentice at BCIT and works as a cabinetmaker with Living Edge Design. His success reflects the combination of classroom instruction and hands-on industry experience that prepares BCIT apprentices to excel in their careers.
“This was a once in a lifetime opportunity. I’m thankful for my years of support from peers, teachers and trainers,” said Merrin following the competition.
The Cabinetmaking program at BCIT equips apprentices with the technical skills required to design, construct, and install high-quality architectural millwork, cabinetry, and custom furniture. Through applied learning and close industry partnerships, students graduate with the experience and confidence to succeed in a rapidly evolving skilled trades sector.
Merrin’s national gold medal is a testament to his dedication, craftsmanship, and commitment to excellence, while highlighting the calibre of BCIT apprentices competing on the national stage.
